Sally takes on the City boys

- Why more and more women are swapping shopping for spread betting

It's pay-day, so what's a girl to do...splash the lot on a designer handbag, or 'invest' her hard earned cash in a spot of gambling?

Spread betting has traditionally been a man's game. But in recent months, statistics have shown an upsurge in interest from women. Finspreads, the UK’s leading spread betting firm, now has over 300 times the number of female customers, compared to when it launched in 1999.

A new book published by Harriman House tells the hilarious story of one woman's attempt to get rich quick, by risking her all in a man's world. Before she wrote 'Bets and the City', Sally Nicoll had a very basic knowledge of spread betting. So, when she was asked to start writing an online trading diary she was stunned.

"I wanted to open an account with Finspreads, because their website had the best colour scheme," explains Sally. However, it's a bumpy ride from day one - after she finds out she's been credit blacklisted and then has to convince the company to take her on board.

To get a feel for the book, imagine this - Bridget Jones meets Wall Street...surely a recipe for disaster. But in the digital era, anyone with a broadband connection and a few hundred pounds can gatecrash the elite world of City traders - even if, like Sally Nicoll, they are numerically dyslexic.

'Bets and the City' takes you inside the dealing room, as Sally begins her transformation from naive beginner to hardened pessimist. Sally's spread betting diary is frank, factual (these are all real trades) and fun - especially when she unwittingly finds herself inadvertently elevated to the status of a trading Agony Aunt: “The best advice I can give is that you should do exactly the opposite of what I do. That way, you’re much more likely to win,” she tells one fellow trader.

However, statistics show in fact that women have a more calculated trading mentality and they clearly outperform men when investing.

So, the gauntlet has been thrown down and 'Bets and the City' is a warning to City boys everywhere - Sally's high heels are well and truly dug in.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
