Betting on successful author debut

It was standing room only at Chalk Farm library when Primrose Hill author Sally Nicoll read from her newly published book, Bets and the City; a diary of her adventures as a financial spread better and day trader.

“About three years ago, I discovered you can bet on stocks and shares without actually owning them, and that all the winnings are tax free,” Sally told her audience. “I thought this looked like an easy way of making money – especially when I found an article about two people who’d made a million pounds on just eight weeks. So I signed up for an account.”

"One thing led to another", Sally continued. “I started out with magnificently misplaced optimism. But spread betting turned out to be much harder than I imagined. There are plenty of traps for beginners, and I’ve made most of them,” she added. “I think that’s why I was invited to write Bets and the City. It’s essentially a what NOT to do book!”

The event was supported by Primrose Hill Books, who sold fifty copies of the book after Sally had read the first three chapters. “Like many writers, I discovered that once the book got going, it took on a life of its own. Essentially, it’s a story of gambling, dogs and Primrose Hill. It’s not your standard financial text book – it has jokes and anecdotes, rather than tables and charts.”

According to Sally’s publishers, Harriman House, spread betting is beginning to rocket in popularly, especially in London. “Bets and the City is a great short cut to mastering the learning curve. It’s also extremely funny,” says spokeswoman Helen McCusker. “For example, it explains why you should never take a holiday in Cornwall when you’re speculating on sterling against the dollar. And why you should resist the temptation to be kind to your mother.”

Spread betting has traditionally been a man's game. But in recent months, statistics have shown an upsurge in interest from women. Finspreads, the UK’s leading spread betting firm, now has over 300 times the number of female customers, compared to when it launched in 1999.

Bets and the City was published in November 2006 and includes a £50 reader offer, for anyone wishing to begin their spread betting adventure.
