Big book arrives...as Blair leaves
Following on from the success of The Little Book of Labour Sleaze, and timed to be published as Blair steps down this month, The Big Red Book of New Labour Sleaze is here.
The first edition of this book was one of the first ever written by a collection of internet bloggers. Iain Dale and Guido Fawkes run two of Britain's most read political blogs. They invited their fellow bloggers and blog readers to contribute to the book, which details more than 100 instances of New Labour sleaze since 1997.
As well as looking back over a decade of Tony Blair's mis-doings The Big Red Book of New Labour Sleaze includes the many examples of Gordon Brown's deviousness, slush funding and abuse of No 11 Downing Street. Gordon tries to stay out of sight when trouble is about but his fingerprints can still be found on many New Labour mis-deeds recorded in the book. As he begins his premiership he will be trying to make a fresh start with clean hands. Herein is the evidence that Gordon's hands are every bit as dirty as his predecesssor's were. The book shows that Gordon is every bit as ready to spin and deceive as Tony, and is even more secretive about his doings.
Iain Dale comments: “The last week of April 2006 saw the political equivalent of a ‘Perfect Storm’. Patricia Hewitt was booed by nurses, Charles Clarke was in trouble over foreign prisoners who had not been deported, John Prescott had been exposed for bonking his cocktail sausage eating diary secretary and in the most bizarre twist of all, cannabis was found in the home of Defence Secretary, Dr John Reid. This followed a month of dire publicity for New Labour over cash for Peerages. Could it get worse for Tony Blair? Yes. Guido Fawkes and I announced the publication of this book.”
“Of course, as soon as the first edition of this book was published it was out of date. And so it was that Guido Fawkes and I decided to update the book to coincide with the Great Clunking Fist taking over from his whiter than white predecessor. We felt it only natural to publish this second edition on 27 June 2007, Tony Blair’s last day in office. It is a fitting tribute to his ten years in power.”
Guido Fawkes adds: “It was Iain’s idea to garner the British political blogosphere into co-authoring it quickly to catch the zeitgeist. This book introduces a wealth of diverse new writers to the book reading public, as for most of our blogging co-authors this is the first time they have been in print on paper as opposed to pixels on screen.”
“We have calculated that New Labour over nine years has produced a scandal a month on average, with little time off for good behaviour, nevertheless within these pages we document everything; shady bungs from businessmen, lying lobbyists, ministers on the make, expenses fiddled and Loans for Lordships made. So if Gordon Brown ever tries to emulate Tony Blair and stands up to say New Labour is “whiter than white”, you can throw this big red book at him.”
