Shares Made Simple
Harriman House
Shares laid bare
- Hemscott Editor publishes beginner's guide
Credit crunch ... Northern Rock ... housing market fears ... falling dollar ... amid all the turmoil, the stock market is still near its highest level for eight years and the key London index, the FTSE100, could challenge its all-time high soon. At last, a book has arrived that gives ordinary investors the chance to take part in the great shares experience that has been a minefield for all but the privileged few in the City of London.
Millions of new, unsophisticated investors have been lured into joining the share owning democracy, first by the privatisation issues and then by the conversion of building societies into banks. They hope for their share of the elusive gold that paves the City of London, the nation's financial heart.
Yet they have only the vaguest notion of what shares are, what they are for or what to do with them. This November, Harriman House publish an overdue book, which sets out to put that right. It explains basic concepts such as:
- What the stock market is and how it works
- Why share prices go up and down
- Why some companies look cheap while others appear to be expensive
- How to make money and avoid heavy losses
- The traps that snare the unwary
Respected financial journalist Rodney Hobson understands the dilemma. In his time working for national newspapers he has fielded many calls from baffled investors who cannot understand why the price of their shares has suddenly leapt or collapsed; why buying shares does not mean they are boosting the company's coffers; or why they should not automatically accept any takeover offer. He explains why now is a good time to invest:
"The stock market has proved for decades to be the safest way of saving, the one sure way of beating inflation over a period of years. Just 20 years ago the FTSE100 was below 2,000 points. Since the bear market at the start of the millennium, share prices have on average doubled in just four-and-a-half years. Medium sized companies have fared even better than the largest one and are now worth on average eight times their value in 1985."
In the no-nonsense style he is well known for, Hobson takes novice shareholders by the hand and carefully leads them, logically and step by step, through the principles of the stock market, clearly explaining each aspect of investing as it arises.
"This book will transform the finance pages of newspapers into a mine of information for thousands of readers who currently find them of a daunting mist of incomprehensible murkiness," says Rodney.
As Editor of financial website Hemscott, he is already doing that through his weekly email: www.hemscott.com
