Finally...advice about how to help problem drinkers

The news is full of social commentary and statistics about binge Britain, but for problem drinkers this type of information provides little help or comfort. A new book published this January by Harriman House aims to plug this gap.

Beat The Booze is an inspirational, easy to read and highly practical book aimed at those who wish to cut down or cut out alcohol, and at those who wish to help someone else with a drink problem.

Contents include:

• Extensive real life case studies including details of people who have successfully cut down or given up alcohol altogether.
• Interviews with leading experts in the field of alcohol addiction.
• Details of the issues involved in helping employees with drink problems.
• A comprehensive list of organisations and details of where to get professional help and information.

The authors are able to draw on personal experience in combating alcohol. Edmund Tirbutt used to have a serious drink problem, and his wife Helen gave up alcohol for lifestyle reasons. Edmund says:?"This is a book we wanted to find in the bookshops ourselves, but most titles on the subject are written largely for medics in a text book format." Helen adds: "We look beyond the conventional and consider everything from new types of pioneering technology, to dietary changes needed in the early stages of recovery."

For anyone concerned about their drinking, or about someone else's drinking, this is an essential book.

Recent statistics*

• Over 9 million people in the UK drink at levels that place their long-term health at risk.
• Each year in the UK, 150,000 people are admitted to hospital due to alcohol-related causes.
• The cost of alcoholism to society has been estimated at over £20bn.

* Appendix 2 of Beat the Booze (Harriman House, 2008)

"First class, in setting out why we have the problem and also the wider reactions of countries in Europe to our own country's self-induced ills. The book also provides real practical help to those who have succumbed in various ways to heavy drinking. How to beat it personally and the appropriate reactions of family and wider society are all very well set out."
- Professor Roger Williams, CBE, Director of the Institute of Hepatology, International Centre For Research Into Liver Disorders

"This is a first class publication that contains a wealth of practical information for patients, families and the general public alike. It is highly commendable."
- Professor Ian Gilmore, President, Royal College of Physicians

"Reads extremely well and is highly informative."
- Dr. Francis Keaney, Consultant Addiction Psychiatrist, National Addiction Centre

"Ideal for anyone with an alcohol related problem, their family, friends or employer."
- Peter Smith, Head of Counselling, Broadway Lodge
