A History of the London Stock Market 1945-2007

Harriman House

Over sixty years of stock market history

A fully updated version of George G. Blakey's bestselling reference work is being published this month by Harriman House. A History of the London Stock Market is a unique record of the people, deals and events that have driven the stock market since 1945 up until the present day.

Written in a down-to-earth, journalistic style, this book reads almost like a novel as it takes you through over 60 years of stock market history. Blakey provides a fascinating perspective on the movers and shakers - the winners, the losers, and the reasons why - giving a rare insight into the workings of the stock market, plus profiles of key players and the movements and effects of new, upcoming markets.

Blakey says: "We have come a long way from the 1970s when visitors to the London Stock Exchange were treated to a film demonstrating that its role was to raise capital for industry and provide liquidity for investors. Arguably, this should still be its role but the advent of globalisation appears to have changed the name of the game from 'industrialisation' to 'financialisation', turning the stock market into a capitalist casino.

This is indeed the end of history for the stock market as we knew it, but looking at the role it will play in a new era created by the opening of a Pandora's Box of deregulation, privatisation, globalisation and the worldwide web, perhaps as investors we have no choice but to resign ourselves to living from hand to mouth within the context of a future we cannot predict nor control."

The book provides an invaluable reference for anyone wishing to understand and anticipate current and future trends in the market.

"My historical reference book of choice. I frequently turn to it when seeking to understand why the financial markets of past years behaved like they did."
- David Schwartz, stock market historian

"I recommend this book as an enjoyable and instructive read that captures the spirit of the times."
- Jim Slater

- ProShare
